Since we're in the photography business, some of our friends with prosumers and DSLRs ask us about the different settings in their cameras, specifically about aperture, shutter and ISO. It's always difficult to answer such questions because these settings are not something you can simply give a one-word answer to.

Sure, I can say, "put your f stop at f/11, shutter speed at 1/15, and ISO at 200." But that hardly explains anything, nor does it even make sense. These three settings really require serious experimenting, and enough time to discuss this.

Anyway, here's a handy Camera Simulator we'd like to share with all of you. For those with iPhones and iPads, you can download this tool from the iTunes App Store.

Gina + Mike: E-Session

It was a cloudy Saturday afternoon when we met up with Gina and Mike for their e-session at Candlewood Lake in New Fairfield, CT. Their e-session was originally scheduled last June, but ended up getting rescheduled. Two months later, we finally got it done. Second time's the charm!

The first time we met them, they made it clear how Candlewood Lake holds a special spot in their hearts. After all, they met there when they were both in their early teens. (In case you missed it before, you can read their story here.) For our part, it was clear to us that Candlewood Lake needs to be the backdrop for their photographs starting from their e-session up to their wedding.

And so we met again with Gina and Mike for the third time , both looking great and ready for their e-session. They brought us to the areas that hold special memories. What a trip down memory lane it must've been for them!

Here are the photos taken during that session.

The photo below is one of my favorites from this photo shoot. Holding hands and look at their feet! They're in sync even while walking!

After hanging out at the dock and the beach, we headed to the ball field where these two also had a piece of history to share.

Gina and Mike, thanks for allowing us to spend the afternoon with you at Candlewood Lake. Being around two people in love, while they're showing us where that love began is really quite a sweet experience. We can't wait to photograph your wedding next year! The Ostunis: A Family Portrait

The day started off rainy. Raining to the point that we wondered if the photo shoot was actually going to happen. Yet like all things that are meant to be, the rain stopped, making the photo shoot possible. Thank goodness it did! Otherwise, we would've missed the wonderful opportunity to work with this family.

Turns out Grandma Jen had long wanted family photos. Grandma Jen was Gina's grandmother. Yes, Gina - the very same Gina whom I blogged about here - set the ball rolling, which eventually led to her aunt Angela booking the session.

When Gina said there will be 23 persons, we were overwhelmed initially. I confessed to her that the biggest (non-wedding) group we've photographed for a portrait session had 11 family members. This was definitely a challenge, but we were more than willing to go for it. The fact that they didn't back down after I told her that was a definite vote of confidence.

These are the results from that day's photo session.

This last shot was taken amid some grumbling from the young ones, but specifically requested by Grandma. What Grandma wants, Grandma gets.

Yesterday, we decided it's high time to dip our toes into Twitter.

Of course, getting started took minutes. What username can we use? Sadly, someone already snagged RedCaramel. So for Twitter purposes, we're TeamRedCaramel. Real name? We'll be jointly using the account, so both our names appear in our profile. Whoever posts, we'll let you know one way or the other.

The best compliment

S + J celebrated their first year anniversary last Saturday. Has it really been a year? Unbelievable. We greeted them on their milestone, and S e-mailed us back. I'm sharing it here because it's such a great way to start the week.

Here's an excerpt from her e-mail to us:

"We can't thank you enough for everything you have done for us, it was so perfect. J and I are forever in love with our pictures and still look at them to this day. I wish we could get married over and over again, but unfortunately things don't work that way [silly me]. I never dreamt of such a perfect day, it goes by so fast and luckily we have the best pictures to capture it thanks to you guys.

"It's so nice to know that we can be friends outside of you guys being our 'Wedding Photographers', really glad we got to know each other."

S + J, thank you. Friendships are two-way, after all. We're glad that we've become friends too. :)

Hope + Juan: E-Session

This was one heck of a smooth and uncomplicated engagement session. We walked around Westport on a Saturday afternoon. Thankfully, the weather cooperated. It was still comfortable - not too hot, not too stuffy. We stumbled upon interesting spots along the way.

Then we have Hope and Juan...a quiet and friendly couple, tall and tiny together in one awesome package (we've shared their story before). Hope told me in advance that she was bringing paper buntings for the photo shoot, so I knew that she was the DIY sort of gal. THEN she brought out the little paper buntings, as well as cupcake toppers (Crumbs was the agreed-upon meeting place, after all), which totally blew me away. (FYI: I'm not very good with crafts, so I tend to go "ooooh" and "aaaah" over those little touches.) The cupcake toppers never made it to the cupcakes, but you'll see them here anyway.

We hit it off with these two, even having cupcakes after the photoshoot. We found out that we all loved the same things--good food and travel, specifically travel just to have a taste of that good food. Truly a couple after our own hearts. :) We kept up a steady stream of chatter on our way to the parking lot, and have plans to meet up again just to eat.

Hope and Juan, thanks for allowing us to take your photos. Until we meet again...in Chinatown maybe?

Arley + Lou: E-Session

Spending a Saturday afternoon with Arley and Lou was truly a blast. Their love story already appeared in this blog before, but this time, I'm sharing the results of an afternoon spent with this two at Southford Falls State Park in Southbury, CT.

Before we even started with our session, we came upon a newlywed couple having their photos taken. We watched from a distance, while talking about the girl's gorgeous wedding gown. Once we were all set, it was amazing how these two felt totally comfortable in front of the camera. I remember asking Lou if he can carry Arley. He just went "sure", then promptly lifted her up effortlessly!

About the balloons, hubby and I were on our way to meet with these two, and we passed by a party store with balloons outside! A light bulb went off my head, so I asked hubby if we can stop and get some. At the end of the photo shoot, Arley and Lou got the balloons. :)

The last photo above was totally my husband's brilliant idea. Happily, Lou was willing to do the shot.

Arley and Lou, congratulations on your engagement! Thanks again for the fun and funny afternoon!

Fireworks!

Can't believe the July 4th long weekend is done! It feels like it just came and went. Hope you guys had a great time celebrating this country's birthday. We were planning to head elsewhere, but since we had a big family portrait session scheduled last Sunday, we decided to stay local (yeah, we can't say no to a photo shoot!). Turned out to be a great decision as it was a Sunday well-spent with a great family (a shout-out to the Ostunis!).

Anyway, here are some photos I took during Danbury Mall's fireworks display. We were happily perched way up on a hill when I took these. Best location decision ever in viewing the fireworks - nice views and a close walk to our parking spot, which resulted in easy getaway afterwards.

Who's up for a cute love story on a Monday morning?

Meet Hope and Juan.

"Adorable" was the word that came to my mind when I saw them. These two shared their lovely love story and photo, which allows us to introduce them to you, our dear blog readers.

We are so looking forward to taking their engagement photos this coming Saturday.

"Juan was born in Bolivia, and I was born in China; Juan was living in Providence and I was living in the suburbs of Boston, but work brought us together in Connecticut. We both started working for the same company in a new college graduates development program. Juan had started working half a year before me and would give me a lot of help at work. Over the course of a couple of months and several happy hour conversations, we got to know each other. It wasn't long before he asked me out on a date where we really hit it off and were inseparable since then.

"Juan proposed to me while we were on a Valentine's Day trip to Boston. We visited the Gardner Museum in Boston, where Juan gave me three Valentine's Day cards at different part of the museum. Then we went to a restaurant where he treated my favorite Chinese dish. Finally we stopped by Memorial Drive; next to the Charles River with a backdrop of downtown Boston in the sunset, he got on his knees and proposed to me!"

Juan really took it up a notch, didn't he? Hitting two birds with one stone - a Valentine's date coupled with a wedding proposal. Impressive! Who can resist it when a guy shows his romantic side? Of course, it does take the right girl to bring out the romantic in a guy. Hubby and I definitely enjoyed reading their love story.

Arley + Lou: Upcoming E-Session

This coming weekend, we'll be working with a lovely engaged couple - Arley and Lou - for their engagement session. We can't wait to meet them, especially after they shared their love story with us. We are now sharing their love story here with their permission, of course!

"My name is Arley and my fiance's name is Lou. We live in the Carmel, NY. He is a correctional officer and I am a dental assistant/ professional face painter/ balloon sculptor (a.k.a., a clown without the big shoes...LOL).

"We met November 16, 2009. It was a set up by our two friends. Funny thing was...is that I didn't want to meet anyone at that time. In the end of October, my friend told me I had to at least talk to Lou because he was perfect for me. Even if not for that, it would be good for me to at least make some new friends. My girlfriend and I decided to go up to Boston to help me get out a little, and that whole trip all I did was talk and text with Lou. I couldn't believe that the entire trip, I was mainly looking down at my phone walking around Boston. When my girlfriend and I got back from Boston, we had a meet-up. She and I made meatballs and pasta, and invited the 'boys' over. It was instant. I still remember him smiling as he first entered my friend's door, all red in the face. It was love at first sight.

"He is my best friend and we couldn't be happier. We got engaged in Long Beach Island, NJ in June of 2010 while visiting my grandparents (they live there and I have been going there since I was a baby). We were given his great-grandmother's ring. For our wedding, we will also have my great-grandmother's wedding band.

"I had no idea that he was going to propose. A tradition in my family is that when you go to the beach, when you first get there, even before you unpack, you have to go say hello to the ocean. So that's exactly what we did. It was dark and the sand wasn't smooth at all! It was windy and cold. All I did was want to go back to the house. He kept insisting, 'Let's go for a walk...ohh, but we just got here...why don't we sit on the bench?' So I said 'ok... let's go sit down before I twist my ankle.' We sat down, and then he kneeled down. It was crazy...all we did was smile and cry. It was one of the happiest moments of my life, yet I can barely remember what we even said. All I remember is his face, and him opening that big red box, and my eyes tearing up. Since then it has been changing our date, place and time of our wedding. Finally, we have a date, place and everything all lined up!"

Another cupcake for another year!

Has it really been two years since we started Red Caramel? Unbelievable. What's even more unbelievable? We can't believe that we missed our own birthday (June 1)! To think that we blogged that day. How is that even possible? But better late than never, right?

Before we turned two, we changed our website and blog (goodbye dark colors and Flash website!). Streamlined our workflow management. There are still plenty of things that we're figuring out.

What exactly should we do with our Facebook page? Should we have a Twitter account? How can we run the business cost-effectively? Given the current economic conditions, how can we help people who need our services, but are on a tight budget? How much bang for the buck can we offer them without sacrificing our own bottom line? We know our business plan when we started isn't set in stone. We keep going back to it, making sure we tweak it accordingly.

Yep, we're definitely still a work-in-progress. That's not going to change anytime soon, and we actually think that's pretty good. Anyway...

Gina + Mike: Upcoming E-Session

We met Gina and Mike last month to see if we can work together for their June 2012 wedding. That meeting lasted an hour - one hour that flew by so fast, neither of us noticed it.

At the onset, Mike shared their story with us, while Gina was off to get their drinks. Who can resist childhood sweetheart stories anyway? Definitely not the sap that I am. But this is their story to tell, so here it is.

"When Gina and Mike first met, they were in their early teens and just beginning a summer on Candlewood Lake. Both too shy to talk to the other, years went by before they finally connected. A few summers later, Mike finally worked up the courage to write a note to Gina and left it by her door. Though still more time would pass before their relationship actually began, it didn't take long for them to realize that they had something special.

After years of a long distance relationship, buying a dog together, grad school, and new jobs, Mike proposed to Gina on Christmas Eve at Candlewood Lake, just steps from where they first met."

They're having their engagement shoot tomorrow, a year before their wedding. And yes, Candlewood Lake's going to be a part of it.

So what constitutes detail shots?

Rings, shoes, dresses, garter, veil, flowers, jewelry, bouquet, cake, place and table cards, invitations, wedding programs, wedding favors, guest book, centerpieces, wedding certificate, anything monogrammed like matchbooks, napkins, coasters, etc. Among other things.

It's anything and everything you thought of, planned for, made or even bought exclusively for your wedding. The special touches that reflects the two of you.

Allow your photographers free reign when it comes to detail shots. Really. You know the items that you want photographed, right? Put them in a small bag, and give it to your photographer on the day of the wedding. Let your photographers work their magic. They'll give it back to you, don't worry. :)

I absolutely ♥ detail shots. Who wouldn't? It shows how much attention our lovely couples put into their weddings. It never fails to amaze us, the level of creativity that comes out, especially from those who are big DIYers. Who notices these things, anyway? We do! After all, letting these gorgeous details go undocumented seem like a travesty.

My husband and I divide and conquer when photographing these details. Now we thought it'd be fun to showcase our favorites from the work we've done. Here's the first batch of our favorites. More to come!

"Should I buy a DSLR or not? My pictures look terrible."

Some of our friends (you know who you are) have asked us that question and similar ones. I usually find it difficult to answer them. I've seen photos by people who use point and shoot cameras that completely bowled me over. They're so gorgeous; you'll weep. I've seen others taken using DSLRs. They were so awful; you'll weep as well.

Does owning a DSLR mean you'll take better pictures? Yes and no.

Yes. With a DSLR, you'll be able to choose lenses and camera settings to improve the picture quality of what you take. You'll also love the level of control you have.

No. You better make time to figure out and study the bells and whistles of your DSLR. You can set it to Auto, but that's like using a point and shoot. Which is what you're getting away from.

I'm a firm believer in "it's what you do with it that counts". Even if you get the most advanced DSLR camera out there, the camera can only do so much. The rest is up to you. When taking pictures, it's all in your hands and your eyes. The camera is your tool. You're the one in charge. YOU'RE the one composing the shot. YOU'RE the one pressing the button. YOU'RE the one deciding who and what to photograph.

Before you plop down those hard-earned cash, go online and look for photos taken using point and shoots. You'll be surprised and yes, inspired. In the meantime, give your point and shoot another chance before you plop down your hard-earned cash for a DSLR camera.

"Do you shoot and burn?"

We've been getting e-mails lately asking this question - "Do you shoot and burn?"

To answer the question, no. We don't shoot and burn. So what IS "shoot and burn"?

Ever heard about those who takes photographs for weddings and special events for a really good (read: low-cost) price, burns the unprocessed images on a CD or DVD, and gives it to their clients? Usually, their turnover time is a day or two. Some can give you the CD or DVD on the same day! THAT'S what shoot and burn is.

A deal becomes a good deal once you see the results. Which means you have to wait for the results before you find out how good a deal you got. "Good things come to those who wait", as the saying goes.

We're all for getting your money's worth. There's nothing wrong in staying on a budget and being economical, especially when you're planning a wedding. We all know that once you tag something with the word "wedding", prices skyrocket big time. But keep in mind - you get what you pay for. Think it over carefully - what's worth your time and money? You've done so much and spent so many months in planning your wedding already. Do you need to continue working so hard on your wedding photographs as well?

We keep our services priced reasonably. We don't nickel-and-dime you. We understand how money's tight for most people nowadays. Plus, we really don't have anything against those who shoot and burn - it's a choice to make. But it's just not something we do.

Care for a pot of tea?

Before I begin, this post is not about weddings, engagements or portraits. It IS, however, about a place we went to lately. And yes, it's a possible venue for special occasions, so we thought it's worth sharing here (especially for those who are planning some special event - birthdays, showers, Mother's Day celebration, etc.).

With much ado over the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, our family recently went for high tea at Maizie's Tea Room in Fishkill, NY and had a splendid time.

I confess, I've never been to a traditional English tea room in fair England or anywhere else, but I loved it. Who can resist tasty teas, savory scones, tempting petit desserts, and filling tea sandwiches? Now I'm even looking for extremely adorable teacups and teapots after finding them at Maizie's. We should've worn fancy shmancy hats as well. Maybe next time. :)

Each of us had our own pot of tea (loose-leaf teas, mind you!). How adorable are these teapots?

We ate these yummy homemade scones with preserves and lemon curd.

The fresh fruits, petit desserts and the tea sandwiches (marinated tomato, cucumber, seafood salad, ham and peach, and egg salad)...all delicious! The whole thing turned out to be surprisingly filling!

That's me reflected in the mirror. My sister-in-law didn't even know I was taking a photo at the time.

And this is my favorite photo that day, hence the special post-processing. :)

Rob, Jen & Ryan: A Family Portrait

Jen is a friend of Cathy, the mom of Ella, who I blogged about before. Jen is also a photographer. Naturally, she hardly gets to have her own photos taken. That's where we come in.

We headed down to Norwalk's Cranbury Park / Gallaher Estate for a morning photo shoot with this family. The sun was out, yet it was cold and damp. Ryan, like most toddlers, was shy in front of the camera initially. Then the rest is history.

Madeleine

We drove down to Bailey Beach on a Saturday afternoon for a photo shoot with Mike, Debi and little Madeleine.

At the end of the session, we got a new friend in precocious Madeleine, who wanted to do absolutely everything: ride the swing. Go in the water. And thanks to her, we got a chance to play tether ball that afternoon.

The cute, smart, sweet, and generous little girl was soon acting like an old friend, referring to my husband as "this guy" and even sharing her M&Ms with us.

Zosia and Ciara

It was a sunny yet cool Saturday afternoon at Edgerton Park in New Haven, CT.

Shelli + Graham's wedding was a series of firsts for us...first time to do a Jewish wedding, first time to witness the signing of the ketubah, first time to watch a ceremony being conducted under a chuppah, even first time to watch the breaking of the glass. It made us realize that time-honored traditions become traditions for a reason. They are beautiful. Finding out the meaning behind the traditions made them all the more special.

S + J: A Vintage-inspired Wedding

They booked us early. From the first meeting that we had with them, there was trust - unspoken and wholehearted - right from the start. This trust means a big deal. Seriously. Before we parted ways, they said that they've decided to get us for their wedding.

Months and weeks before their wedding, we'd meet up with these two and got the chance to know them. By the time their wedding rolled around, it felt like we were attending two good friends' wedding.

What drives us

Some days, I admit, running our own business is challenging, to say the least. Even with the two of us working together, there's still a lot to do. Sometimes, even when you know it's all part of what you dream of, the easier way out seems...well...the easier way out. Why not just throw in the towel and give up? We're hardly quitters. Yet no matter how focused you are on your goals, it happens. Ask anyone with their own business. They can surely relate.

But then we hear from happy clients, and it completely turns things around.

The Toddler Test

God bless Ella Fearless for taking us out of our comfort zone. We've been so used to taking photos of adults that taking her photos served as a good reminder.

"Let it be." The Beatles were right.

Toddlers are one of the cutest photo subjects out there, yet the most challenging.

They're on the move. Running. Walking. Jumping around. Hopping. Skipping.
They're freaking out at the camera.
They're in a playful mood. They just want to play.
They're not in the mood.
They're tired.
They're sleepy.
They're hungry.

Forget about a structured, organized session. Even the best intentions can go awry.

They'll pose when they want to pose. They'll stay still when they want to. If they want to run, then run alongside them. If they want to play, you either join the game or take photos while they're playing. If they want to plop on the ground, then you plop on the ground with them.

What you shouldn't do? Don't force the situation. Don't force the child to pose this way or that. That's a sure-fire way of failing the test.

Let them do what they want. Focus on them as they focus their attention on doing what makes them happy. That way, you'll surely capture something far more real than a posed shot.

Rob, Cathy and Ella knew about us thanks to Keely and her parents. Rob and Keely's dad are long-time friends. Ella and Keely are playmates.

We spent a nice Saturday afternoon with this lovely family in Darien. Kudos to her parents for being prepared, complete with books, toys and even a bubble machine (oh, and don't get me started on that adorable picnic basket they had!). Funny enough, Ella was in no mood to pose for photos. All she wanted to do was walk around the park. And walk she did. Can't blame her, really. It was a perfect day to hang out in the park.

It was amazing to see such a clear personality in so young a child. Here's Ella Fearless with her mom and dad.

Wrong weather forecasts.

We had a family portrait session scheduled last Saturday.

On Thursday, the weather forecast for Saturday indicated 40% chance of thunderstorms.
On Friday, the weather forecast remained the same.
On Saturday, the sun was out. The weather was gorgeous. We drove down to Darien, met with the family and had a good photo session.

Sometimes it's good when something's wrong. In this case, the wrong weather forecast turned out well. It worked to our advantage. Yay for that!

Red Caramel Photography turns 1!

I remember that day when we decided to really, seriously go for it.

Nerve-wracking best describes the months, weeks and days leading up to Decision Day. Knowing how to take good pictures is not enough of a reason to start a business. You have to know how to run a business. What's more, if we're going to do this, then we're going to do this 100%. No way were we going to get into this half-heartedly. We either jump or we don't. One thing we were sure of - we were in this together.

Once we decided, there was no going back.

After we had the paperwork all sorted out, we wanted to hit the ground running, and get our online presence started. I remember spending a weekend working on the website, and another weekend on the blog. Once I did my share, he took over to tweak things code-wise.

A year later, we're a toddler in the business, but we've learned so much already. We've worked with fantastic people for their weddings, engagements and family portraits. Volunteered at the local shelter to help little dogs find their homes. Invested in additional equipment. Made friends with fellow photographers and other fine folks with their own businesses, both here in the east coast and in the west coast.

A work-in-progress - that's what Red Caramel is, and proudly so. We'll keep aiming for the stars.

Thanks to our family and friends who continue to support us, and of course, our clients-turned-friends who trust us to capture their special moments!

Happy clients. Nothing starts off a week the right way than knowing your clients are happy with your work.

Last Saturday, we got an e-mail from S thanking us for their engagement photos. "We looked at them and we really LOVED them." Two days later, we're still basking in the afterglow of those good words. Especially finding out that they can't help, but keep looking at the photos.

That e-mail surely brought smiles to our faces. Knowing they're happy makes us happy. What a great way to start the week.

Last Saturday turned out to be an awesome day to shoot an engagement session. The sun was out. The morning was cool and windy, but eventually warmed up, although still windy.

J (the groom-to-be) and S (the bride-to-be), you two make such a sweet couple. We can't wait to shoot your wedding this coming July!

I'm used to having brides-to-be contact us for information. Usually. But these two surprised me in a good way. (Oh, and for privacy reasons, I'll just use their first name initials as per their request.) J, the groom-to-be, was the one who e-mailed! Of course, it made me go, "awww! That's sweet! He's helping with the wedding planning and doing his share! What a good guy!"

After e-mailing to and fro, my husband and I met with them last winter. High school sweethearts, they have been together for, like, forever. They've been engaged for quite sometime. Finally, they decided to tie the knot this year. That's where we come in. We agreed that the engagement session will be done once the weather warms up. We scheduled it for May 2010 (last Saturday), but the weather didn't really feel like cooperating with us.

Now I can't wait for their engagement session this coming Saturday. So far, the weather forecast for this Saturday said partly cloudy. Now we're hoping it stays that way.

Rescheduling, instead of canceling, a photo shoot when the weather's bad.

We were all excited to meet with S and J (one of our July 2010 couples) for their engagement shoot last Saturday. However, last Friday, we checked the weather forecast for Saturday. Yikes! Rain and thunderstorms! After a brief exchange of e-mail, we agreed to reschedule the session for this coming Saturday, same time, same place.

Some things aren't set in stone. Things get in the way, but in our line of work, it's mostly bad weather.

The day before our shoot, we'll check the weather forecast. If it says inclement weather ahead, for portraits, we'll reschedule; for weddings and events, we'll keep you indoors and dry. Of course, whether or not the weather forecast is accurate is another matter altogether. But we'd rather reschedule than have our clients get all soggy and wet. It also works to our advantage - we'd love to keep our equipment dry as well.

Today, I was lucky enough to receive good news. Every bit of good news is still good news. Gotta be thankful for that. Even better, it was on a Monday morning, so it was a great way to start the work week.

Newlyweds and newlyweds-to-be.

Every couple who gets married or planning to get married makes me believe in love and the whole institution of marriage all over again.

I'm a romantic at heart. Yet let's face it, marriage is one of those things that get a bad rep. Some people scoff at the idea of getting married to the point of contempt and pessimism.

That's why I find it refreshing and romantic when I learn of people getting engaged and eventually, getting married. Here's proof that marriage isn't dead yet. Here's proof that there are still who believe in what it stands for.

Every wedding is a promise. It represents a belief in something far greater than the humdrum matters we deal with everyday - love. After all, a wedding requires commitment to each other and to your relationship. This same commitment gets the two of you through every step, not only of the wedding planning process, but your entire life together. Especially when you've found the one who makes it all worthwhile.

All about sales talk

I confess, my husband and I have no idea how to make a sales talk when dealing with potential clients. If we were forced to save ourselves by making a fine sales pitch, then I reckon we won't survive.

I'm inclined to let our photographs do the talking. If a picture's worth a thousand words, then by the number of photos we have, we already have a novella. Or so a friend of ours said.

What's more, most people can detect when someone's making a sales pitch. Others are OK with it; some aren't. Perhaps at some point, we'll learn how to do a proper sales talk. But not yet.

In defense of moms with cameras

"Moms with cameras". I keep coming across this phrase online group discussions. Somehow, the way the phrase gets bandied about is with a mixture of disdain, disrespect and ridicule.

OK, I'm not a mom with a camera. I AM a "gal with a camera" (who can transition to being a "mom with a camera" in the future), but my sensibilities are offended by such an attitude. So what if they're moms with cameras? Isn't what they can do with their cameras the important thing? What's the deal with deriding them for being moms? Knocking them down a peg or two might make good competitive sense. But there IS room for Davids in this Goliath world.

Give people a choice.

I'm all for women pursuing something that interests them. After all, you have to start somewhere. And yes, they already have a ready customer base – the other moms they know from their children's play dates, etcetera. I have to admit though, such put-downs tend to teach small business owners how to play the big boys' game.

But my question is, didn't your mama teach you not to be a bully?

Riela + Emmil: Couple's Shoot

I blogged about Riela and Emmil before, so you probably know that Emmil's in Las Vegas, while Riela's here in Danbury.

These long-distance lovebirds been together for more than a year. Emmil was here for a week-long visit, so we scheduled a couple's photo shoot on a cold Saturday spring afternoon. Afterwards, it was off to Deborah Ann's Sweet Shoppe in Ridgefield, CT for ice cream and hot chocolate. These are some of their photos from that day.

Easter weekend.

Specifically, this Easter weekend. We did the usual Catholic Easter observances up until yesterday.

We attended Easter Sunday Mass. Then we headed to an Easter celebration with lots of food, fun and laughter.

After the eating was done, it was followed by the Easter egg hunt. The kids were sent out to the yard, while the adults watched as the young ones looked for the eggs all over the place.

Happily, we also got some fun photos of the people goofing around. That kind of fun is something to be thankful for today.

We can't wait to meet with our July wedding couple, Shelli and Graham, tomorrow at Edgerton Park in New Haven, Connecticut. My husband and I haven't been to Edgerton Park, so this is a good time as any to check out the site.

It'll be our first time to do a Jewish wedding - and an outdoor garden wedding, at that - so we're pretty excited about this. Of course, I've done bar and bat mitzvahs before, so I'm quite familiar with the horah. Truth be told, I find the lifting of the honorees on a chair so much fun to photograph. The expressions are just precious! But what I'm really looking forward to is taking photographs of the ceremony under a chuppah, and the breaking of the glass by the husband.

Come on, July, be here already!

Joys of taking wedding photos

A friend asked me last night what made us choose wedding photography as a niche to focus on. For some, it's a no-brainer choice. It's fairly dependable because you get bookings far in advance. Plus, it's such a special event that people are willing to pay for good photos.

As for me, I love anything and everything to do with weddings. After planning our own wedding way back when, I fell in love with the actual wedding planning process. I would've probably ended up a wedding planner, had I not decided to focus on wedding photography instead. Since I'm a big fan of doing what you love and loving what you do, what better way to do that than to combine my love for weddings and photography?

For a couple of hours, we become a part of something special – the love of a family.

We witness the laughs, the giggles and the tears. We become both casual observers and active participants. To take good photos, we have to be in the moment somehow. Every emotion during the wedding day is amped up - nervousness, excitement, anxiety and more. We see the details that go unnoticed by most people – the veil, the tiara, the flowers, the wedding favors, the gown, the shoes, the cufflinks, the centerpieces – but was given a lot of time and attention by the bride and the groom (and whoever else was helping the couple, of course). When I'm at weddings, my mind's whirring like crazy, thinking of exactly what else was given special attention and planned to perfection.

Of course, there are those who shudder at the prices associated with wedding photos. After all, how hard can it be? "A monkey can take a picture". Sure, you can teach a monkey to press the button, but can you teach the monkey how to capture that smile on the groom's face as he sees his bride walk down the aisle?

I rest my case.

Riela was already featured in this blog before. Emmil's a newbie here. In fact, it was our first time to meet him last Saturday.

He's from Las Vegas; Riela's here in Danbury. Don't these long-distance lovebirds just make a cute couple? We think so, especially after seeing the chemistry between them.

To Riela: it was great seeing a different Riela...a very much in love Riela, if I may add. ;) You are always a fun photo subject, always ready and willing to ham it up. And your shoes, girl, I love your shoes!

To Emmil: it was great meeting you. What a good sport you are! You didn't want to smile for the camera, yet you'd grin right after I'd press the button...like it was an inside joke for you not to smile for the camera. But we'll see...

When someone contacts us for wedding photography information, I usually reply with the requested information. I also make sure to tell that we're available to meet with them, if they're interested. After all, it's always nice to put a face to a name.

During the meeting, be prepared. I WILL ask you questions. How did you two meet? What's your love story in a nutshell? If it seems like I'm being pushy and intrusive, it's largely for your benefit. I can get the job done without finding out what you want. But that would only guarantee that I'm happy with the job. What about you? So yes, allow us to get to know the two of you. Share with us what you're looking for. Disclose your likes and dislikes. That way, we'll determine if it'll be a good match between the two of you and us.

These meetings are like dating, you know. Sometimes the chemistry's obvious at the onset. Other times, no. If the chemistry's there, then we're all good. We leave the meeting with handshakes and smiles all around. Days later, if we truly clicked, then we find out that we got the job. All's well.

And that's the reason why it'll be nice to see you.

Spring. It's finally spring. The time for new beginnings. A promise of something good. A beginning of something nice. So much to look forward to. What makes it even better, it's supposed to be spring and it feels like spring. Or at least, it felt like spring this past weekend.

We had a great start on the season, covering Bryan and Jessica's wedding last Saturday.

Yesterday, we went for a walk in the park. Totally spur of the moment that I didn't even have my camera with me. We saw swans, ducks and geese. Of the three creatures we saw, the two swans swimming gracefully along side by side - symbols of eternal and enduring love - captured my attention. Now I'm planning to go back and photograph them.

Wishful thinking

I love stories about love, even if they’re not mine. I love hearing about people falling in love, getting engaged and married, and living their ever after. Yeah, the eternal optimist and romantic in me admits that, and not even a teeny bit ashamed to say it.

In that vein, allow me to indulge in a little wishful thinking. Here goes…

I want to photograph:

An elopement wedding – City hall-type of wedding. Intimate. Just the two of them, plus the judge. Perhaps even a witness or two. And us, of course, to capture those special moments. That would be fabulous.
A vow renewal – What says love and commitment more than two person willing to do it all over again? For some people, once is more than enough. Yet there are some who’d do the same thing for a second time. To the same person. Wow.
A same-sex marriage or commitment ceremony – A touchy and controversial subject to some, but not to us. After all, love is love. And yes, Connecticut allows same-sex marriages, so photographing such an event doesn't seem like such an impossible idea.
A newborn – Just pure cuteness. What other reason is there? I haven’t photographed children in a while now.

Great if we can expand our experience with more, more, MORE!

Of course, we’d love to continue working with engaged couples, soon-to-be-wedded couples and happy families.

Jessica + Bryan: Upcoming Wedding

Bryan is my husband's officemate. He's Malcolm's "dad", whom I blogged about before.

One day, Bryan surprised me with an e-mail about "a super fun happy good time wedding for Bryan & Jessica".

Now I'm always up for a fun wedding, whether as a guest or as a photographer. Turns out we were wanted as both wedding guests and wedding photographers. Attending and photographing their wedding - it doesn't get any better than that.

It would be even better if Malcolm will be around wearing his own doggy tuxedo. That'll make a cute subject as far as I'm concerned.

Daylight Savings Time.

I admit, what's the fun in losing an hour of your good night's sleep? That's hardly fun, I know. But come on, when DST starts, it means spring is right around the corner! With spring comes new beginnings...blooming flowers and lush green grass, which makes for great photo ops!

Tuesday in the city

My sister celebrated her 40th birthday last Tuesday. So off we went to celebrate in the city. Boy, what a celebration it was! Let me correct that, what a food-filled celebration it was.

Here are two photographs from that day. The first one's in Central Park, and the second one's outside Serendipity 3. I would've taken more, but we were too busy eating and having a blast.

Imke + Karsten: engaged!

Guess who's excited about an engagement session this coming Saturday? ME!!! That is, if the weather cooperates, which is what I'm hoping for. Weather forecast said rain. Oh dear.

The engaged couple, Imke and Karsten, are personal friends of ours. Karsten was my ever-patient work mentor and proposal writing partner-in-crime who taught me about heating and cooling systems, LEED, core and shell, commercial interiors, among others. Most importantly, he enlightened me about the joys of using MS Excel (yeah, I wasn't a big fan of that, so yay, Karsten!).

Anyway, Imke and Karsten have been together for a long time. I still remember when they first started going out. Someone was just smitten, completely enamored. : ) Tying the knot seemed meant to be for such a couple in love.

Now I better start chanting "rain, rain, go away" to keep the rain clouds at bay on Saturday. Wish us luck that the sun comes out!

UPDATE: We rescheduled the photo shoot for tomorrow, Sunday the 14th. But somehow, it still looks like the weather wouldn't be much different than how it's been today. :(

Being able to say "no".

When you're running your own business, it's easy to say yes to everything and everyone. You want your business to succeed, after all. So whatever opportunity comes your way, aren't you supposed to grab it with both hands, hold on to it with all your might and never let go?

But sometimes, not all opportunities are right up to our alley.

"Edgy, high fashion and stylized images. That's what we're looking for."

Or even opportunities that we're comfortable with.

"Do you do nude photography? My wife and I want such photos taken."

Then I say no to such inquiries. I'm all for getting dragged out of my comfort zone. I'm the last person to complain about trying new things. But sometimes when something doesn't feel right, it doesn't feel right. When that happens, I refer them to other photographers who are better suited for them. Is that good business sense? I think yes.

What's more, I don't even regret saying no to such opportunities. Saying no to the ones that aren't a good fit leaves room for the ones that ARE a good fit.

We can't be everything to everybody, but we can be something to someone.

Last year, my husband and I went to "An Evening with Miss Sarah and Friends" that I blogged about here.

This year, it's back!

Too bad though, we can't go this year.

Anyway, if you're interested in going, our dear readers, this event will be held tonight, Friday, March 5, 2010 from 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm at the West Norwalk Congregational Church (275 Richards Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06850). Sarah's husband Chuck Chesler will be there, as well as the Gianquinto sisters Mary and Margaret.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Admission includes a glass of wine. What's more, they serve wine and hors d’oeuvres.

Oh, and I took that photo on the right after last year's event. They let me. They're nice that way. : )

California dreaming

I woke up today thinking of California.

I wonder when we'll go for another visit. Last time we were there, it was for a sad reason. I hope the next time we go, it'll be happy and fun. In the meantime, I'll deal with my California dreaming with photos from when we were driving down the Pacific Coast Highway. This ought to tide me over.

It's beautiful. It's fleeting. It comes and it goes. While it's around, you just have to admire it and marvel at it. Because at some point, the snow will melt away. And just like that, it's gone.

I'm thankful to live in a country...in a region of this country...that has such beauty.

As I've mentioned before, sometimes I go online in search of other photographers just to oooh! and ahhh! at their work. A photographer I came across lately is Auey of Photograffiti by Auey Santos. Her photographs are beautiful!

Surprise, surprise...it turns out that not only do we share the same alma mater, we finished the same course! Yes, she's also a UP College of Mass Communication alumna, a Broadcast Communication graduate. However, I don't know who graduated first between the two us. Not that it matters. :)

It's just too bad that she's in California, while I'm here in Connecticut. It would've been fun to work together sometime. Then again, we do have family living in California, so Auey and I might just end up working together or going on a photo shoot sometime. You never know.

Engagement shoots? Why, yes!

"Why do we need an engagement photo session? It’s just an added expense."

Many an engaged couple have uttered such a statement. Admittedly, it IS an added expense. But...

Your wedding day is not the right time to feel ill at ease and self-conscious smiling at your photographer.

Having an engagement photo session is a way to get to know you and make you feel at ease. It's a good opportunity to feel comfortable having your pictures taken, having a camera in your face and getting used to paparazzi. You can have your photos taken in a fun and relaxed environment without the pressures associated with the actual wedding day.

In any case, even if you want your photographer to use a photo journalistic approach, there will be moments when you'd have to stop and smile directly at the camera. It's inevitable.

So if you're having second thoughts on having your engagement photos taken, think again. If the photographer you chose offer free or discounted engagement shoots upon booking of a wedding package, go for it.

From my point of view as a photographer, I love capturing images of couples in love. Once the initial hesitation and shyness wears off, it is fantastic to watch a couple interact with each other – holding hands, looking into each other's eyes, teasing and laughing at each other's jokes, putting their arms around each other, hugging and kissing. It becomes my job to get all that and more.

Engagement sessions are also more laid-back than weddings. I'm focused simply on the two of you – no guests milling around, no time line to follow, no rush, no hurry. By the time your wedding rolls around and we're there to take your photos, we're familiar with each other.

After all, we'll be with you the whole day of your wedding. You'd want to spend the day with someone you know following you around, wouldn't you?

Feeling under the weather. So why is that something to be thankful about? It's a good reminder that I've been working too hard. So hard that I've reached the point that my body's telling me to slow down. Take it easy. Relax.

I've been sick since last Wednesday. But I know that I can look forward to feeling better soon. It's great when things are smooth-sailing, but that's not how real life works. When things go bad, sometimes it even goes from bad to worse before it gets better, but it DOES get better.

So in the meantime, I'm reminded and reminding myself to pace myself with my work. Take deep breaths. Focus in the now. After all, we're doing more than enough. That should be enough.

Strawberries

More strawberries!

These photos were taken back in 2007, but they remain favorites of mine. Since I shared the pink champagne with strawberries photos, I thought I'd show you these as well.

Anyway, the set-up was simple. I grabbed a couple of strawberries from the refrigerator. Then I took the lamp from the guest bedroom to provide lighting. I placed the strawberries on top of the night stand and voilà!

The strawberries were probably wondering what the heck was going on.

Somehow I find strawberries a good subject to photograph. I haven't really tried other fruits (like bananas, oranges, cantaloupes, watermelon, etc.), so now I'm adding more fruits to my subject list.

I used my old Fujifilm FinePix s6000fd for this shot, which is not the camera I'm using nowadays.

This particular long weekend. Can you believe it - Presidents' Day, Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, and the start of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games 2010 - all in one weekend? It's hard to know where to focus your attention. Do you pick and choose the one? Or do you go for all of them?

In any case, a long weekend is a long weekend. It's just interesting having four reasons. Makes it special somehow. Most of the time, weekends are already fun on their own. A long weekend, all the more so.

What should we post in a photo blog?

Why pictures, of course! But what type of pictures?

When we came up with this blog, it seems obvious to me that we'll post client pictures, tales of upcoming and completed photo shoots, business development ideas, etc. But what if we're in between gigs? Or what if recent clients do not want their photos posted online? What would be the point of all this?

I've blogged about other photographers and how great we think they are. It's probably not a good thing to talk about that when we're in the same business. But somehow, I believe everyone's got their own place in the sun. If you see something good, then say something good about it.

I also know I've been doing it already for sometime - posting non-work photos here. Today it occurred to me whether or not I should be doing so. After all, we're in the business of taking portraits, events and wedding photography. Smart marketing says we should target our audience accordingly, right? We should post relevant photos that will attract the people we'd like to work with.

But photography is something I love to do, and something my husband's learning to enjoy as well. I don't take pictures only of our clients. We take pictures of anything and everything. Instead of having the photos "gather dust", so to speak, we might as well post them here.

So we decided that we won't limit ourselves to our business' photographs. What you'll see here is not all work. After all, it should not be all about work. We'll continue posting photos of other things as well. We hope you don't mind. We just want to share them with you.

Eyeglasses. We went for our eye exam last Saturday. Our friendly and instructive ophthalmologist prescribed corrective lenses for me to use while I'm using the computer. A pair slightly more powerful than what I've been using.

So today I say thank you to this pair I've had for a while now. You served me well, dear eyeglasses.

My new pair has a striking burgundy and pink tone. Oh yeah. I admit, I was inclined to go with the usual neutral tones again. Something more suited for an adult like me. Something sensible. But since the eyeglasses doesn't need to be constantly perched on my face, I went all rebel-like and got a colorful frame. Yay!

Funeral photography - yes, no or maybe?

During my father-in-law's funeral last year, I met with three different photographers who took pictures during the funeral Mass, burial and wake. It made me wonder if funeral photography would be something that I'd like to do at some point in the future.

A life well-lived deserved to be documented and celebrated in its final phase. After all, life events such as births, birthdays, engagements, weddings, anniversaries and the like get recorded, so why not deaths? Some people think it's morbid and in incredibly bad taste having a photographer lurking around in funerals. I suppose it depends on those who are left behind. If they want it documented, why not? If not, then don't.

Most people want to be left alone with their grief. The last thing they need is a photographer with a camera to their faces, no matter how quiet and unobtrusive you try to be. You don't want to encroach on their grief. You must know when to put that camera away. You'll need massive doses of empathy. At the same time, you must be able to detach yourself. Keep that sense of humor and bubbly personality toned down.

What's more, how appropriate is it to take pictures of the deceased? Does it depend on the photographer's level of comfort or the family's request? If you feel uncomfortable with it, but the family requests it, do you suck it in and man up? Or do you politely and respectfully say no? Do you even post such pictures in your photo blog or gallery? Death is not something most people like to see or be confronted with. Are you even supposed to offer packages with free prints and an album?

Perhaps funeral photography is something we can give a try. After all, why not? But I doubt if we'd like it to be our business' bread and butter. I'm not sure if I can detach myself from the emotions of the day. It's something that must definitely be handled with care.

February is Black History Month. Groundhog Day's tomorrow. Mardi Gras is on the 24th. Presidents' Day is on the 16th. Oh, and of course, Valentine's Day is this month. Not bad for a month that has only 28 days.

Philippines: Boracay, Aklan

We woke up to the sight of snow today.

What better way to warm up than with memories of balmy places, coconut trees, warm blue waters, and a beach surrounded by powdery white sand! Allow me to share a few images captured when we went on a quick trip to Boracay in the province of Aklan last month. Boracay is an hour away from where my husband grew up. He's been wanting to bring me there for the longest time.

Believe it or not, all I wanted was to sit outside, soak in the atmosphere and stare at the gorgeous view. There were lots of activities going on, but I had my own expectation of what makes a fun island getaway. Do nothing, but relax and have quiet time with your thoughts. As it was my first time to visit there, my husband agreed with my idea of Boracay fun. We watched the sunset. At night, we sat outside stargazing. We ate dinner facing the water with sand in our feet and wind in our hair, while enjoying the company of new friends and listening to the sound of waves (we couldn't really see the water as it was dark). Too bad we couldn't stay longer. Perhaps next time.

Digital cameras. Point and shoots, DSLRs, camera phones - I'm glad they're around.

Remember the good ol' days when most of us used point and shoot film cameras? Putting the film inside the camera was tricky until Kodak Advantix came along. And rewinding the film? Some cameras rewind your film for you; others require manual rewind. Oh, and when someone accidentally opens the back of your camera and your film gets exposed? You start praying that there will be something salvageable; otherwise, you're screwed.

What's more, you really have no idea how good or bad are the pictures you were getting. You look in the viewfinder, assume that everything is alright and click away. You discover the results once it gets printed. By then...well, it's kinda too late. Especially with special events. When you get really crappy prints, you kinda feel bad throwing them away. After all, having them printed cost you money.

I remember the days when friends would borrow negatives of pictures from my camera. The negatives get passed on from one person to another. So basically, we all have the same pictures shot by the same person. If you're in luck, someone generous would've made 2 sets of the photos and you end up with a free set of pictures...woo hoo!

So do I miss film cameras? Not really. With digital cameras, we can go crazy taking pictures. There's no limit to the number of pictures we can take. You have to discipline yourself not to get carried away. Even if you DID get carried away and ended up with hundreds and thousands of pictures, well, you can always delete some of the images or keep them all.

Now, making memories has been made simple. Thank goodness for digital cameras!

Philippines: Flowers in Aklan

One thing that struck me about Aklan as we flew over and drove around the province was how lush and green the landscape was. What's more, colorful flowers abound like crazy! I thought I didn't really get to take lots of pictures. As it turns out, I did get some colorful ones.

I woke up today and the sun was shining. That's a good sign already. I love winter. I love snow. I love the cold weather. But sometimes, seeing the sun shining outside is just enough cause for glee. Even if I'd stay indoors because it's still cold...ha ha!

Next, when I checked Red Caramel's e-mails, we received e-mails from 2 couples who want to meet with us this month. They're interested in our services, so yay! for that.

Then there was an e-mail from Jaymie who responded so quickly to my e-mail yesterday. You gotta love fellow photographers...especially the ones who've been at it for a while now. So generous with what they know. Yes Jaymie, we'll continue working together this year. I wouldn't pass up the chance to work with you and Izzac.

Maybe I'll do this every Monday. Make it a series of sorts. "It's Monday, so I'm thankful for..." It wouldn't be a bad way to start the week.

South Korea: thanks to exceedingly long layovers

My husband and I ended up going to the Philippines last month for funereal reasons. Since it was already the start of holiday peak season travel, most flights were fully-booked. The few flights that were available cost an arm and a leg. However, since we had to go, the choice was either to bite the bullet, or to bear with long layovers. We chose the latter. Believe it or not, we endured 15-hour layovers each way. It sounds all dreary and dreadful, but actually, it turned out to be a good thing. We got to check out South Korea! Allow me to share some of the photographs I got during those layovers.

We saw Gyeongbokgung Palace, Insadong, Cheonggyechoen Stream, Heungryunsa Temple and Yonggungsa Temple, and the National Folk Museum of Korea.

We also ate bibimbop, bulgogi and pajeon, plus some pastries the names of which we didn't really get.

What's more, we can't believe that we found airport food that we enjoyed - cheap and yummy!

So yes, patience does pay off.

A personal wedding website? Why not?

This post might sound like some hokey commercial (it is, kinda), but I wouldn't write about it if I didn't think it might be useful to you, our dear readers (or at least some of you).

To those of you who are engaged, you know already how crazy wedding planning can be. Now why would you even want to create your personal wedding website with everything you need to do? Well, sometimes you just do. If you're not sure how to get it done, hop on over to WeddingWindow.com.

I remember when my husband and I got engaged in 2000. Guess who had the brilliant idea of creating an engagement website? Me. Guilty as charged. At first, it felt like an added to-do in an already long to-do list. What the heck was I thinking? Not only were we neck-deep in planning the wedding, I was also busy updating our engagement-turned-wedding website. Eventually, it kept us updated on what's been done, what we needed to do and what people want to know about.

Honestly, no matter how often you tell people about your wedding plans, it's not as if everyone's taking notes. Someone's bound to forget. Having a wedding website somehow made it easier. Your family and friends, especially those who are oh-so-far-away, get to share in the excitement of your wedding planning. You can even include the story how you two met, fell in love and of course, how he proposed. A simple wedding invitation doesn't really share that much information.

After we were married, I was busy updating the website again on how the wedding went. I posted photographs, even shared little anecdotes detailing what happened during the days leading up to the wedding. Other brides who were planning their own weddings somehow found their way to our website. They'd e-mail asking questions, seeking advice, and sometimes, merely sharing their wedding woes. Me being me, I thought that was just fun. In fact, I only took down the website last year.

If only WeddingWindow was around back when we got married, it would've made my life slightly easier. Perhaps we can use it for a vow renewal. :)

Haley + Brandon: E-Session

Let me introduce you to Haley and Brandon. I told you all about them before. We met them the day after Christmas. On a cold and dreary day.

There was a bit of concern that since their wedding will be in June, having engagement photos shot in winter might be a bit off. Add to that the coats, which are definitely a dead giveaway. But what can we do? When we're given lemons, we make lemonade...or lemon pie. After all, no matter what the season is, love's unstoppable. :) That's what happened to us that day as well.

Haley and Brandon, it was great meeting the two of you. Despite the weather, I hope you guys had fun. Congratulations on your engagement. Happy wedding planning!

Haley + Brandon: engagement session

My husband and I finished an engagement session today with Haley and Brandon, our lovebirds from Arkansas. We had it at Tarrywile Park and Mansion here in Danbury, Connecticut.

Haley's 20, Brandon's 22. They're both from Arkansas, and getting married there next year. They're currently in a long-distance relationship - Haley lives in Arkansas, while Brandon moved to Connecticut this year.

We were supposed to have the e-shoot back in November, but was rescheduled due to an emergency in our family. So we scheduled it the day after Christmas. Which is today. Turned out to be a dark, dreary, overcast, slightly rainy and oh-so-cold day. I wasn't sure if our shoot will happen. I sent Haley an e-mail last night that if conditions were awful, we'd reschedule again. But I was concerned because she flew in from Arkansas. It wasn't as if it's everyday that she's here in Connecticut.

So all four of us - Haley, Brandon, my husband and I - braved the cold and had the pictures done. Poor Brandon was freezing! I made sure that I didn't waste any time in getting their pictures. What can I say about these two? They're such a sweet young couple, and such good sport at having to pose despite the cold temperature. What's more, I didn't tell Haley this, but I loved listening to her speak. Her accent was just totally adorable! Brandon seemed shy at the start, but eventually got into the spirit of things.

I'll share some of their pictures soon. You'll see what a gorgeous couple they are.

Out of lurk mode

I admit, I wasn't really lurking in the lurk sense of the word. We had two family emergencies that required our time and attention, which sadly took its toll on our dear Red Caramel.

The first one had my husband and me flying to California and the Philippines. The second had us New York-bound for a couple of days. We'd like to say sorry, sorry, sorry to those who wanted to book the 2009 Portrait Special, especially those in Connecticut. I would've loved to take your photos, but life is full of surprises - both happy and sad. But now we're back and raring to go. Life moves on.

In the meantime, we hope all is well with you and your loved ones. Love them. Kiss them. Hug them. Life is short.

Valerie + Sidney's Wedding

My husband and I attended Valerie and Sidney's wedding last weekend. We were there in our official capacity as "wedding guests". Unofficially, I was the "undercover photographer", though how undercover I was is a point of contention since I was all over the place with my dear camera on hand. So maybe I wasn't that much of an "undercover photographer". Even better, no one told me to stop taking pictures - not even the official photographers - so I didn't.

By the way, Val and I were at-work compadres, partners-in-crime, accomplices, shock absorbers, and what-have-yous. We kept each other sane when stress and workload were driving us just insane and right up the wall. I distinctly remember the morning when she went to my office, closed the door and showed me her engagement ring. Awwww! So much excitement! I gave a loud "oh my goodness!" and we hugged like giggling girls. I've always been a big fan of love stories, happy endings and new beginnings.

And now allow me to present some of the photos I took during that day.

"Who's the crazier driver between you two?" Then they'd have to raise the shoe of the person. The DJ clearly said that they're not supposed to look at each other. Guess who snuck a peek?

Jaymie of J. Castro Photography surprised me last month by e-mailing me whether or not I'd be interested to join him and Izzac to cover a wedding in Hudson Valley.

Was he kidding? Of course I'd be interested! I LOVE weddings. It's just such a hopeful moment. Add to that the fact that I'll get to take pictures. The whole thing sounds just about perfect!

Get this, I was one of three...THREE!...photographers. Basically, I'd man the photo booth, but I can take as many pictures as I want. So off I went to New York for Erin and Patrick's wedding. I didn't even know how Jaymie and Izzac looked like, but oh well. I was sure that I'd find them anyway...or they'd find me if I looked particularly lost.

Agreeing to work with these two guys turned out to be a good idea. Watching them in action was just amazing. They've been doing wedding photography for 3 years and it shows - both in their work and in their working relationship.

Aymii: Belly Dancing Photos finally!

When Aymii contacted me for head shots and belly dancing photos, it never even occurred to me to say no. After all, I DO know my way around my camera. Head shots, I was confident that I can do. But belly dancing photos? That's not really part of what Red Caramel offers. In fact, I haven't really done that type of photography AT ALL. I thought that the type of photos that Aymii wanted requires a different method than what I was used to.

Aymii knew what she wanted with the belly dancing photos..."I'd like to go more for a sensual, dreamy, classy, classic look rather than fantasy." She liked mysterious as well. It was a challenge that my husband and I had to rise up to...or fail miserably. Most of the photos I've taken and he worked on can't hardly be described using the adjectives that Aymii used. BUT...

There's always a first time. Plus, one should always step out of their comfort zone. It doesn't have to be everyday, but every now and then. This was a chance to do so. Here are the results. What do you think?

This is not work-related, but simply our way of spreading the word about what happened in the Philippines.

Philippine National Red Cross lists the following as the most urgently needed items:

Food items: Rice, noodles, canned goods, sugar, iodized salt, cooking oil, monggo beans and potable water
Medicines: Paracetamol, antibiotics, analgesic, oral rehydration salts, multivitamins and medications to treat diarrheal diseases
Non-food items: Bath soaps, face towels, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, plastic mats, blankets, mosquito nets, jerry cans, water containers, water purification tablets, plastic sheetings, and Laundry soap
Rehabilitation Programs: Shelter materials for house repair

Other relief operations also need shoes, clothes, and ready-to-drink milk.

If you can't help financially, then simply pass the word along. PLEASE. The more people who know, the better.

Tammi + Jeff: A Wedding Out of the Ordinary

Purple was the color of the day. The bride wore a white knitted Ralph Lauren top, and an ankle-length skirt that had purple gradient color. The groom wore pants and a purple dress shirt. The bride had purple streaks in her brown hair. She did not carry a bouquet, but had a wrist corsage. The groom had a boutonniere. Both wore hiking boots. The only homage to tradition was the veil and the subtle headpiece that the bride wore.

About 30+ people hiked to Wadsworth Falls State Park's Little Falls. The hike took about 30 minutes each way. There was nothing traditional about their wedding. They had the exchange of rings, and then the exchange of vows. During the reception, they had the cake cutting only. It was a relaxed summer day wedding that reflected how Tammi and Jeff are.

We're glad to have been there for their truly extraordinary, unconventional and unique wedding. Thank you for the opportunity, Tammi and Jeff. You guys rock!

I've been quiet about it, but I've been looking for fellow photographers for possible collaboration sometime in the future. Or even just to talk shop. Share battle stories. Compare notes. Laugh about the fun and craziness of running one's own business.

Then came Ms. Riela B. who told me about J. Castro Photography.

She knows them personally and told them about us as well. When I heard that, a lightbulb lit up in my head. Here was possibly someone I can reach out to! Me being me, I sent an e-mail to them. Goodness, they do such beautiful work! I just had to tell them. They replied back with some nice words for us and some questions as well. Check out their work. Am I right or am I right? :D

OK, before I freak you out that I'm some kind of a stalker, I'm not. Sometimes it's just nice to be in touch with people on the same (or similar) boat. We don't have to end up best friends with linked arms and cameras clicking away, hopping down the street while singing a merry tune, but being colleagues would be a good start.

Something personal

Like most families, heart disease runs in my blood.

Anyway, my father's been in and out of the hospital lately. The doctors don't want to do open heart surgery, so we're waiting with bated breath if he'll get accepted for percutaneous aortic valve replacement. Hopefully, it'll be a yes.

If you can just include him in your daily prayers, even as a postscript to your prayers (whatever works), then much love, hugs and thanks goes out to you from me and my family. I'm a big believer in prayers. I'm sure you are too. His name's Mel.

I'll be heading out today for a photo shoot with Ms. Riela B. of Makeup by Riela B.

Riela happens to be my niece. Well, she's my bro-in-law's niece, which makes her my sister's niece as well. I'm her aunt, a sort of extended aunt, I guess. I've seen her since she was yea high. Now that she's in her 20s, she's getting her own business started, which I think is so cool - starting a business at such a young age.

Anyway, she needs some photos for her website, and that's where I come in. Happily, helping her with her photo needs will assist in building up Red Caramel Photography's portfolio as well. Talk about mutually beneficial huh! After that, we will be having another photo shoot to showcase her makeup skills. Of course, I would love to be her makeup model just for fun, but I'd really rather take pictures. :)

I do like helping fellow small business owners. Honestly, with the current economy, we small business owners should really be helping each other. Aymii: Belly Dancing Photos

On the day that I took Aymii's head shots, I also took pictures of her wearing her red Middle Eastern dance costume.

The picture on the left is a work in progress.

What can I say about this photo shoot? Having a model who belly dances is something not a lot of people have the chance to photograph. So thanks, Aymii, for the opportunity. Hope you had fun as well.

And the outfit! I don't even know where to begin! Can you see the details on it? Just too gorgeous for words! At the end of the photo shoot, even I wanted to give belly dancing a try.

I sent the photo to her as an "appetizer" of sorts for the other photographs to follow...some of which you'll see here sometime.

I realized that I've been writing here without introducing myself. So here goes...

Hi. I'm Cecilia.

I'm one of the two owners of Red Caramel Photography LLC, a Connecticut-based photography business that offers photography services for weddings and events, children, family and pet portraits.

With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communication (which I never pursued after graduation) and Masters of Arts credits in Journalism, I also studied graphic design and technical writing. I also took a couple of art classes while in university.

Somehow, I found myself in various non-creative jobs for so many years - doing editorial work, legal and environmental research, technical writing, proposal writing and marketing. I worked for government agencies, an international organization, a manufacturing firm and a sustainable design consulting firm. I survived and lived to tell the tale. Most of what I learned, I'm now bringing into my photography.

Through the years, photography was something I enjoyed doing, but I never thought of taking a step further. After all, photography was a hobby. Creative pursuits were something you do outside of work. Until one day when I asked myself, "why not?" The question kept popping up in my mind. Fate is funny that way.

Apart from taking pictures, I also love to read. Which continues to help me a lot with my photography. I usually hang out in the local library, grab whatever photography books and materials I find, and read it avidly. Now that you know a little about me, it's time to tell me more about you.
